13 shops destroyed in major fire breakout at Tura market

Tura, Oct 16: A major fire broke out late Tuesday night destroying an entire chain of shops adjoining Tura super market wiping out goods worth lakhs of rupees.

Superintendent of Police, Fire and Emergency Services, Bruno A Sangma told The Meghalayan Express that thirteen shops were destroyed in the blaze.

A majority of the destroyed shops were operating from shanty dwellings and a electrical short circuit as the reason for the breakout is not being ruled out.

“Most of the shops did not have fire safety norms and regulations,” said SP Sangma.

The blaze is said to have started from one of the shanty stores adjoining the super market and the districy council market building.

Highly combustible items in some stores accelerated the blaze. The fire also reached some of the supermarket stores that were located close to the mishap. A electrical store with goods worth lakhs on the second floor was also damaged in the fire.

Some of the stores destroyed in the inferno were Sinha clothes store, a electrical store of N Modok in the super market, Prodip Saha tea stall, Santosh Sah fruit store, Amit Dey medicine store, Nirupom Roy shoe shop, Nantu and Mintu Sarkar bag stores, Arjun Prasad shoe store, Sanjay books stall, a watch shop, a teer counter and a bus ticket counter, among others.
