Shillong, June 11: In yet another professional landmark, the NEIGRIHMS has successfully conducted a corrective spinal surgery on a 16-year-old girl, who was suffering from a severe case of scoliosis deformity, a condition characterised by an abnormal curvature of the spine.
The procedure stands out as one of the first of its kind to be performed in a government medical institute in the North East, an official statement said.
The girl is in stable condition and recovering well under the supervision of the nursing team with ongoing physiotherapy support.

NEIGRIHMS director Prof Nalin Mehta appreciated the surgical team led by Dr Sachlang Debbarma and others engaged in the operation for the achievement.
If left untreated, scoliosis can lead to serious complications such as chronic pain, respiratory issues and poor quality of life. Early diagnosis and timely surgical intervention are crucial in correcting spinal deformities and improving long-term outcomes, the statement said.
The NEIGRIHMS director said such procedures underscore the institute’s expanding capabilities in managing complex spinal disorders through multidisciplinary collaboration and state-of-the-art surgical technology.
