2 HNYM members among 4 held for extortion bid

Shillong, Sept 18: Four persons including two members of Hynniewtrep National Youth Movement (HNYM) were arrested on charges of extortion and criminal intimidation of a woman here on Wednesday.

The arrested persons have been identified as HNYM members – Garnett Gedian Khongwir (30) and Kyrshanbor Lyngdoh (38) –  Thounaujam David Singh (41) and Narendra Kabrambam (29), said Sylvester Nongtnger, superintendent of police, East Khasi Hills in a statement.

According to a complaint lodged at Madanrting Police Station on August 24, the complainant was first contacted by an unknown person on August 8 around 7 pm and demanded Rs 10 lakh.

Thereafter, the person contacted the complainant on several occasions and insisted that the amount be paid immediately.

As the complainant did not comply with the demands, the accused person along with two of his accomplices trespassed the complainant’s house on August 20 with the intent of extorting money, the SP said. 

In absence of the complainant at home, the accused persons allegedly criminally intimidated the complainant’s daughter with dire consequences.
