9,000 seats to be added at HS level with Rs 10 cr additional expense per annum

Shillong, May 1: In order to enhance the intake capacity at higher secondary level in government schools, the state government has decided to upgrade six secondary schools to higher secondary schools and introduce new streams in 11 higher secondary schools.

This will add another 9,000 seats to 11th standard to the current capacity of 12,000 and cost the exchequer another Rs 10 crore every year.

“The government took the decision due to deficit in the intake capacity at eleventh standard and the disproportionate concentration of higher secondary schools, mostly in urban areas of Khasi-Jaintia Hills region,” government spokesperson Paul Lyngdoh told reporters after a cabinet meeting on Thursday.
