Guwahati, May 14: The Assam BJP has come out swinging in praise of the state police’s swift and aggressive crackdown on what it calls “anti-national elements”—individuals accused of cheering for Pakistan and terrorists while living in India. Acting under the directive of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Assam Police has arrested 61 people across multiple districts for making pro-Pakistan and anti-India remarks on social media.
“These aren’t just social media trolls; they are traitors abusing Indian soil to support the enemy,” said Assam BJP spokesperson Ranjib Kumar Sarmah in a press release Tuesday. He said the arrests followed incendiary posts made after the Pahalgam massacre in Kashmir and the Indian Army’s counter-terror operations.
Districts with the highest number of arrests include Cachar (8) and Dhubri (7). Sarmah stated that the arrests span across various districts: 3 from Barpeta, 2 from Biswanath, 1 from Bongaigaon, 8 from Cachar, 3 from Chirang, 1 from Darrang, 7 from Dhubri, 3 from Goalpara, 1 from Golaghat, 2 from Hojai, 3 from Hailakandi, 2 from Karbi Anglong, 2 from Kokrajhar, 2 from Kamrup (Rural), 3 from Lakhimpur, 2 from Nagaon, 2 from Morigaon, 4 from Sonitpur, 1 from Sivasagar, 4 from Sribhumi, 2 from South Salmara, 1 from Udalguri, and 2 from Tamulpur. According to Sharma, the highest number of arrests were made in Cachar and Dhubri districts.
Following CM Sarma’s zero-tolerance directive—”Arrest anyone who supports Pakistan or terrorism while living in India”—state police ramped up social media surveillance. By May 14, 61 individuals had been detained for alleged seditious activity.
The BJP has publicly thanked Chief Minister Sarma for his uncompromising stance and applauded the Assam Police’s “resolute action to protect national security.” The party emphasized that supporting the enemies of India, in any form, will be met with full force.
“This is not just law enforcement—it’s a message. Assam won’t be a safe space for traitors,” Sarmah added.
