1250-km roads to be built in state during 2024-25

Shillong, Aug 29: The Centre has set a target for Meghalaya to construct over 1,250-km roads under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) Phase-III within 2024-25.

Construction of 400-km roads in the first phase of PMGSY-III has already been sanctioned by the Union Ministry of Rural Development while the state government is awaiting sanction for implementing the 600-km second phase.

“I am confident that we will get the sanction for this in due course of time,” said Deputy Chief Minister in-charge PWD (Roads) Prestone Tynsong in the assembly on Wednesday.

The ministry, meanwhile, relaxed guidelines for implementation of PMGSY-III in Meghalaya following a request made by a delegation led by him and chief minister Conrad K Sangma.

While replying to a motion moved by UDP MLA from Mawkyrwat Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar, the deputy chief minister also said construction of the road from Photjaud-Tynnai to Mawbidong in Mawkyrwat block was proposed to be taken up under PMGSY-III.

Earlier, the MLA said the local people had threatened to hold “non-cooperation movement” if the government failed to take up construction of the road.
