Speeding truck rams Tura night bus, 4 passengers injured

Tura, Sept 5: Four passengers onboard a night bus that left Tura for Guwahati  were left injured after a loaded truck coming from the opposite side at high speed rammed it outside Rongram, 12 kms from Tura, late Wednesday night. Among the four injured passengers are two women.

West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police, J F K Marak, told The Meghalayan Express that the incident took place after the speeding truck coming on the wrong side of the road dashed against the bus. The truck was laden with cartoons of packaged drinking water destined for Dalu border town.

“Four passengers, including two women have been injured and the driver of the truck has been detained. He was found to be intoxicated,” said the SP.

The night bus (AS 01 GC 5044) originating from Mankachar in Assam had entered Tura as part of its daily routine to pick up passengers and was part of the convoy that left town at night. It had 31 passengers.

It was while the bus was on a climb towards Asanang that the truck (ML09 A 8005), driven by one Bedinath Hajong, came and rammed the side of the bus with full impact.

Two women passengers, Puljan Begum and Puljan Devi, along with Nobijir Rehman sustained serious injuries and have been taken to Tura Civil Hospital for medical treatment. Another passenger, Sohidul Islam of Dhubri, escaped with minor injuries. Rongram police were able to seize the truck and arrest the drunk driver, while the rest of the passengers were provided with a new bus arranged by the bus owner to continue with their journey to Guwahati.
