Speaker reviews progress of new assembly building construction

Shillong, Sept 20: Meghalaya Speaker Thomas A Sangma Thursday reviewed the progress of the ongoing construction of the new assembly building at Mawdiangdiang.

“We are satisfied with the progress of the work,” he said, after holding a review with officials and the construction firm.

He said that the Assembly Secretariat has paid attention to ensuring that the building and its surroundings are in harmony with the natural environment. “I have called various departments, like the Forest and the Horticulture Department, to see that the entire premises of this complex are surrounded with as much greenery as possible,” the Speaker said.

The Speaker also directed the Arts and Culture department to design the interiors, especially along the hallways, corridors, and reception areas.

“On the first floor, they will try to enact the story of Meghalaya in the reception area of the Legislative Assembly. And on the ground floor, they will try to depict the history of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly over the last 50-51 years,” he added.

On delay in completion, the Speaker said, “The work is in full swing, and we will complete the entire project very soon. The dome is also under construction and will cover the main assembly hall.”

“We are lagging behind the timeline, but the project will be completed soon,”  he assured.

The timeline for completion of the building was September 30, 2024.  The civil work is almost in the final stage of completion, while the interior and other design works are currently underway.
