MSPB to submit city traffic management plan

Shillong, Sept 24:  The Meghalaya State Planning Board (MSPB) will soon submit comprehensive recommendations to address the ever growing traffic congestion in Shillong city.

“After meeting with all line departments, we will prepare and submit comprehensive recommendations to the state government for taking necessary action to address the problem of traffic congestion in the city,” said Metbah Lyngdoh, chairman of MSPB after holding the first round of meeting on the issue.

Four departments – Urban, PWD, Transport and Home (Police) – submitted detailed representations highlighting the different hurdles and issues faced by the respective departments and suggestions thereof.

The MSPCB will hold meetings with other line departments soon and prepare comprehensive recommendations to the state government, Lyngdoh said.

Meanwhile, he said, the MSPB had suggested appointment of more traffic personnel as an immediate measure to address the issue of traffic congestion.

There are only 150 assigned constables for 7 police stations.

Referring to around 400 home guards on duty, Lyngdoh said, “We cannot expect too much from the home guards.”

The Home department assured MSPCB in the meeting of addressing the issue immediately.

Mentioning his suggestion to the chief minister in 2018 to move the capital out of Shillong, Lyngdoh said, “Government is moving in that direction.”

On traffic during school hours, he said the Urban department’s STEM scheme led to decrease in the number of vehicles wherein one bus carries students ferried in 12-13 cars.
