Darrang incident: Schools to ensure students’ safety through checking of bags, pockets

Guwahati Sept 26: In the aftermath of the tragic death of a minor student who was struck by a senior at Padumpukhuri High School in Sipajhar town, Darrang district, the Kamrup Metro district administration has issued a directive to enhance student safety. On Thursday, the administration instructed the heads of all government, provincialized, and private schools to conduct regular checks of students’ bags and pockets.

This measure aims to ensure the safety and security of students within school premises, to prevent similar incidents in the future.

In an official order the District Mission Coordinator of Sarba Siksha Abhijan (SSA), said: “Consequent upon the fatal incident that took place in a school of the nearby district, it has been decided by the undersigned that all government/ provincialised and private schools functioning under Kamrup Metro district should check the school bags and pockets of all students by the concerned class teachers before starting class each day and must ensure if the students have any arms/weapons/ sharp weapons or any toxic products like liquid, gutka, tobacco, cigarette etc or any other objectionable items.”

“If found it would be immediately ceased and inform their parents immediately and also a proper copy of information should be sent to the undersigned,” the order stated.

“This matter is to be treated seriously and to be strictly adhered to in all schools in Kamrup metro district without fail daily,” the order added.

On September 23, a senior student called a junior student out of the classroom and engaged him in a physical altercation. The junior student, who suffered from epilepsy, was struck in the cheek and head, causing him to lose consciousness. Later the student succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital.
