Exodus of Kukis in Karbi Anglong, KLA warns Assam govt, KAAC

Guwahati Oct 5: The Karbi Lamment Amei (KLA), a Karbi literary organization, has expressed strong concerns regarding the influx of Kuki community members into Karbi Anglong following ethnic clashes in Manipur.

In a letter addressed to Tuliram Ronghang, the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), KLA president Kamsing Hanse and general secretary Liladhar Teron urged the government not to allocate land to the displaced Kuki people.

They also emphasized that once peace returns to Manipur, the Kuki individuals who sought refuge in Karbi Anglong should be deported. The KLA fears that land allocation to these refugees could disrupt the demographic and social balance in the district.

According to the KLA, many of these displaced Kukis are settling in the Singhason and Khonbamon hill areas, particularly within the Singhason and Borjan Member of Autonomous Council (MAC) constituencies under the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC).

The KLA fears this occupation threatens their ancestral lands and has urged the Assam government and KAAC to intervene.

While they acknowledged the humanitarian need to assist displaced people, they suggested that temporary camps or shelters be established under strict supervision.

According to Liladhar Teron, the general secretary of the KLA, the Kukis have taken advantage of the hilly terrain and are armed with sophisticated weapons. This, he warned, could lead to a “grave situation” in the district if law enforcement agencies do not act swiftly to address the issue.
