Former Speaker Martin Danggo quits BJP

Shillong, Oct 8:In a setback for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), former Assembly Speaker Martin M Danggo resigned from the party on Monday on “personal ground”.

“…I do hereby tender my resignation from the primary membership of the state Bharatiya Janata Party on personal ground,” the former Ranikor MLA stated in a letter to the party’s state president Rikman G Momin.

Danggo joined the BJP ahead of 2023 assembly elections after being declared official candidate of the ruling National People’s Party (NPP). The five-time MLA was defeated by sitting Ranikor MLA Pius Marwein.

He resigned as a Congress MLA in 2018 and joined the NPP, after the previous NPP-led government had upgraded Ranikor block to a full-fledged civil subdivision. However, he was defeated by Marwein in the bye-election.
