Garo group moves top cop to curb smuggling

Tura, Oct 18: Garo organization ACHIK has called upon the Deputy Inspector General of Police for Western Range to take urgent steps to curb the illegal export of livestock to neighboring Bangladesh and prevent entry of narcotics from across the border into Garo Hills.

The ACHIK group submitted a letter to DIGP Raghavendra Kumar in Tura on Friday pointing out the smuggling racket that is prevailing along several parts of the Garo Hills border.

It urged the police to have a joint coordination with villagers and social organizations to create awareness about the dangers of smuggling and narcotics.

Organize awareness campaigns in border villages to inform the local population about the dangers and legal consequences of engaging in smuggling activities and strengthen vigilance by working together to improve surveillance, intelligence
sharing, and the reporting of suspicious activities, demanded ACHIK in their memo to the DIGP.

Local communities can act as avaluable source of information for Police as well as BSF personnel and community engagement through holding of regular meetings is a requirement for protection of the border, mentions the Garo group.

It has also called for providing assistance to individuals who have been involved in smuggling, offering them alternatives such as vocational training or livelihood programs to discourage illegal activities.
