Rules to regulate Housing dept’s rental houses

Shillong, Oct 23: The state government has approved rules to regulate Housing department’s rental houses for government employees, paving way for plugging revenue leakage due to non-payment of rentals by some tenants.

Informing this after a cabinet meeting held at Resubelpara on Thursday, housing minister Marcuise N Marak said the state government had already created housing property in every district of the state.

However, he said, there are no rules to regulate renting of these housing buildings owned by the Housing department (which includes the middle income group (MIG) and low income group (LIG) buildings) to government employees.

“Anybody who doesn’t pay the rent, we don’t have any rules to impose (fine) on them. We don’t have any rules based on which we can take action. Therefore, these rules (have been approved) today to regulate the rental houses of the Housing department,” the minister added.

The rules would also regulate allotment of government quarters, and rental housing scheme of state government employees.

It will enable the Housing department to take charge of their assets, evaluate, wherever necessary and take necessary decision with regards to creation of additional rooms and other infrastructure.
