Guwahati, October 26: In a significant move against insurgent activities in Upper Assam, the Indian Army and Assam Police arrested several key members of the ULFA(I) on Friday in a joint operation.
The operation, based on credible intelligence, targeted individuals with direct ties to ULFA (I) leadership, specifically ULFA(I)’s self-styled commanders, Brig Arunodoy Dahotia and Brig Ganesh Lahon.
The operation was based on intelligence about active communication between OGWs and senior ULFA (I) commanders Dahotia and Lahon over encrypted channels. This intelligence was relayed to the Inspector General of Police (Northeast Region), prompting an immediate response from security forces.
The first raid, conducted on October 25, 2024, in the Namtola area of Charaideo district, involved the Indian Army, Assam Police, and 23 Assam Rifles/HQ 73 Mountain Brigade. This operation led to the capture of Prem Newar, a prominent linkman with reported affiliations to ULFA(I) Commander Ganesh Lahon.
Simultaneously, a second raid was conducted in Chabua in the Dibrugarh district, resulting in the apprehension of two ULFA(I) operatives- Ujjal Gohain (alias Socrates), son of late Hem Chandra Gohain and Shashanka Rajkhowa, son of Keshab Rajkhowa. Both were identified as key OGWs for the insurgent group.
