‘No suggestion on high speed rail yet’

Shillong, Oct 30:Tourism minister Paul Lyngdoh said he was yet to receive any suggestion for Guwahati-Shillong “high speed rail” as demanded by Meghalaya Tourism Development Forum (MTDF).

The MTDF submitted a memorandum to tourism department recently, suggesting a long term policy to promote the local tourism and also a high speed luxury rail network to reduce the travel time between Shillong and Guwahati.

He, however, refused to comment on the contentious issue of bringing the rail head into Shillong, saying, “This does not involve tourism, it relates to transport department and any decision in this regard can only be taken at cabinet level,” he stated.

He also said the need of the hour is a fully functional Shillong Airport that would save lot of travelling time between Guwahati and Shillong.

Meanwhile, the KSU, which has been opposing railway project in absence of an anti-influx mechanism, asked the MTDF to “stop dreaming” about any high speed rail between Guwahati and Shillong.
