HYC warns of protests over anti-drug steps

Shillong, Nov 8: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has threatened to launch agitation if the state government failed to fulfil its seven-point of charter demands to tackle the drug menace in the state.

Formation of an anti-narcotic task force (ANTF), a dedicated police team to deal with drug trafficking, is one of the key demands of HYC. Meanwhile, the HYC has decided to issue a 30-day ultimatum to the government in this regard.

“We have decided to issue an ultimatum of 30 days to the state government to take necessary steps to comply with the seven-point demands,” said Roykupar Synrem, president of HYC after addressing an anti-drug public rally held at Motphran here amid tight security.

Shops in Khyndailad and Motphran area remained closed during the public rally.
Warning the government of launching strong protests if the demands are not fulfilled, he said, “HYC will not hold any more meetings but we will be calling all citizens to march towards the secretariat.”

Mentioning about a letter from social welfare minister assuring government’s consideration of the demands and a meeting on November 14 to discuss the issues, he said, “Many a times the government is quick to give assurance through letters, but always takes time to implement the same.”

The other demands of HYC include increase in treatment and rehabilitation facilities, free detoxification, OST and day care centres, investigation and prosecution of cases under NDPS Act, prevention of illicit trafficking that is PITNDPS Act, 1988, strengthening drug supply reduction strategy and an office of narcotic control board (NCB) in Shillong.
