1st rhino calf born in Assam Zoo after 11 years

Guwahati, Nov 10: For the first time in over a decade, the Assam State Zoo cum Botanical Garden in Guwahati has welcomed a new rhino calf, born to a female rhino named ‘Pori’. This marks a significant event for the zoo, as it is the first rhino birth there since 2013 when a calf was born under an ex-situ conservation program.
Currently, the zoo houses a total of eight rhinos—four females and three males, alongside the new calf.

Assam’s Environment and Forest Minister, Chandra Mohan Patowary, celebrated the news in a social media post, commending the zoo’s staff for their dedication and commitment to animal care.

Patowary credited Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s leadership for the strides Assam has made in wildlife conservation, calling this new birth a testament to the efforts of Assam State Zoo officials.

With rhino populations thriving in Assam’s natural habitats, this successful captive breeding reflects the ongoing progress in rhino conservation in the region, which is known for its commitment to protecting this iconic species. The first rhino calf was born in the zoo on September 2, 2013 under ex-situ conservation programme.
