Tura, Nov 24: Opposition TMC candidate Sadhiarani M Sangma has failed to shake off the jinx, losing the election for a third consecutive time from the Gambegre constituency. In each of the three contests, she was a close second, but victory eluded her.
A sitting GHADC MDC and the wife of former minister Zenith Sangma, she first contested the Gambegre assembly election in 2018 as the official Congress candidate taking on sitting legislator Saleng A Sangma.
Saleng had first won in 2008 as Congress candidate and went on to win the 2013 assembly polls as an Independent after Mukul Sangma denied him a ticket.
In a tight contest at the 2018 elections, Sadhiarani Sangma (Congress) lost to Saleng Sangma (NCP) by a wafer thin margin of just 136 votes.
She returned in 2023 as the Trinamool Congress candidate to face Saleng Sangma, once again. However, she could not keep the momentum of the 2018 election alive, losing to Saleng Sangma by a margin of 2871 votes.
And the margin has extended further in this by-election as new challenger Dr Mehtab Chandee A Sangma of the NPP came away trouncing the TMC candidate by a large margin of 4594 votes. Apparently, the jinx remains as strong as ever.
