Relocation of street vendors: Not aware of any change of date: Paul

Shillong, Nov 24: Social welfare minister Paul Lyngdoh, against whose statement street vendors and hawkers staged a protest march on Friday, has remained firm on his remark.

Lyngdoh, who had said the street vendors would be relocated on November 24, maintained that he was not aware of any extension of the date.

“I am not aware of any extension because the deadline (November 24) was indicated to us at the meeting by the commissioner & secretary urban affairs,” he stated.

He, however, said deputy chief minister in-charge urban affairs Sniawbhalang Dhar would soon convene a meeting to take stock of the situation relating to proposed relocation of hawkers and street vendors in Khyndailad area.

The street vendors and hawkers staged a protest march to Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) on Friday against the proposed move to relocate them from Motphran and Khyndailad area.

Meanwhile, the minister termed the street vendors’ associations claim that they were not consulted on the issue of relocation initiated by Shillong Municipal Board.

Steering clear of the controversy, he made it clear that his tourism department is only concerned about giving a facelift to Khyndailad stretch by making it a tourist friendly bustling zone.
