ISKCON welcomes B’desh HC order, calls it ‘great relief’

Kolkata, Nov 28: ISKCON on Thursday welcomed the Bangladesh High Court’s decision to reject a petition seeking a ban on the organisation’s activities in the neighbouring country, calling it a “great relief.”

The petition was filed by a lawyer who sought the court to ban the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) in Bangladesh.

“It is a great relief that the Bangladesh High Court has rejected the petition,” ISKCON spokesperson Radharamn Das told PTI.

He added that the organisation had been deeply concerned by the stance of the Bangladesh government in the case.

The ruling came a day after the country’s attorney-general had urged the court not to take any decision regarding ISKCON as the government had begun taking necessary actions.

Das expressed hope that the Bangladesh government would take steps to ensure the safety and security of religious minorities, emphasising that ISKCON has always been focused on welfare activities.

Hindu organisation takes out protest march to B’desh Dy High Commission

Members of Bangiya Hindu Jagaran Manch on Thursday took out a rally to the office of Bangladesh Deputy High Commissioner in Kolkata protesting atrocities on the Hindu community and arrest of spiritual leader Chinmoy Krishna Das in the neighbouring country.

The protesters marching to the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission from Sealdah station were stopped by the police on their way.

Police put up barricades to prevent the protesters from reaching near the deputy high commission office at Beckbagan in south Kolkata.

Bangladesh’s minority Hindus, which constitute only about 8 per cent of the 170 million population, have faced over 200 attacks in 50-odd districts since the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government on August 5.

Hindu spiritual leader Das was arrested in a sedition case. He was later denied bail by a court, triggering protests by community members in various locations, including the capital Dhaka and the port city of Chattogram. (PTI)
