HC disposes PIL on NEHU

Shillong, Dec 7: The Meghalaya High Court on Friday disposed of a PIL following gradual return of normalcy in the strike-hit North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), but allowed the petitioner to apply again “if the occasion so arises in the future”.

“This Court had taken cognizance of the state of affairs in NEHU,” the order issued by the bench comprising chief justice IP Mukerji and justice B Bhattacharjee said while referring to a submission that “situation in the University is slowly moving towards normalisation. The scheduled examinations have been postponed. Classes have commenced.”

It said the inquiry committee constituted by the Union Ministry of Education is inquiring into the issues before it upon extension of time to file its report granted by the Central government.

“We think the purpose of this PIL has been served. We dispose of this petition with the above observations, with liberty to apply afresh, if the occasion so arises in the future,” stated the order.
