Beef ban by Assam not acceptable: Marcuise Marak

Shillong, Dec 10: The growing opposition to the ban on beef consumption in public by BJP-led Assam government has found its echo in the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) in Meghalaya as well.

“We are democratic country and we are free to eat anything. Food habits are a right of every individual. So therefore I don’t accept the kind of ban on beef in any state,” NPP state working president and cabinet minister Marcuise N Marak said on Tuesday.

Stating that food habits are a way of life, the minister said, “For example, we are tribals, we eat so many things.”

Putting restrictions on food habits is not acceptable at all, he said.

Referring right to freedom of speech and right to economic activities (violated by the ban), he said, “In fact our fundamental rights are being deprived by putting on such restrictions.”
