A DREAM plan to impart vocational training to recovering drug addicts

Shillong, Dec 14: In a novel and challenging attempt to address the issue of drug abuse, the state government has planned to impart vocational trainings to recovering drug addicts under Drug Reduction, Elimination & Action Mission (DREAM) Meghalaya.

By introducing vocational training programmes in the state’s rehabilitation centres, the government has aimed at equipping individuals recovering from substance abuse with practical skills to lead independent and productive lives.

The plan was formalised in a consultative meeting with stakeholders, including representatives from rehabilitation centres, government bodies, and vocational training agencies, in Shillong on Friday.

The discussions centered on identifying suitable courses, fostering partnerships, and ensuring adequate infrastructure and resources.

Established training institutions such as Skills Development Society, Industrial Training Institutes (ITI), BITS, Don Bosco Technical School, and Ramakrishna Mission are expected to play a vital role in this DREAM initiative.

“Many of these training centres already provide free training,” said DREAM director FG Kharshiing.

“We thought, why not collaborate with rehab centres to introduce vocational training during rehabilitation. This could significantly transform lives,” he said.

Emphasising broader impact of the initiative, the Mission director said vocational training can motivate young people undergoing rehabilitation and provide them courage to stand on their own.”

Asked if recovering addicts would embrace these vocational courses, he acknowledged it’s a challenge.

“This problem is extremely complex. It’s not like treating a patient in a hospital where you follow a set procedure. Here, we’re dealing with individuals who have undergone major lifestyle changes that have deeply affected them,” he said.

Underlining multiple solutions such as physical training, counselling, and community support, awareness, he said, “If vocational training works, it would be a significant achievement.”
