State records increase of over 50,000 voters

Female voters outnumber males by nearly 31,700  

Shillong, Jan 6: Meghalaya has recorded an increase of over 50,000 voters in the state electoral rolls in the past one year.

As per the final electoral rolls, the total number of voters stood at 22,69,512 whereas the voter count in January last year was 22,17,100, recording an increase of 52,412 new voters in one year.

The final electoral rolls of January 2025 were released by chief electoral officer (CEO) BDR Tiwari at a press conference here Monday.

Female voters (11,50,599) have once again outnumbered the male voters (11,18,907), the difference being 31,692 voters. This trend in matrilineal Meghalaya in unique with most states recording otherwise.

There are also six third gender voters as well.

The EP (electors to population) ratio as is 645 while the electors’ gender ratio has been recorded as 1,028.

There are 3,764 service voters, including 3,673 males and 91 female voters.

With capital city Shillong in it, East Khasi Hills as usual recorded the highest number of voters 3,20,553 while South West Khasi Hills has the lowest, 38,742 voters.

Further, there are 72,941 electors in the age group 18-19 years, 10,398 electors above 85 years and 11,960 elections are recorded as persons with disabilities (PwDs).

Meanwhile, the names of 17,096 persons have been deleted from electoral rolls due to various factors – 8,936 due to death, 7,775 due to shifting and 385 due to duplicate entries.

Altogether, 31,372 of 32,500 forms were accepted for corrections.

The CEO also informed that currently there are 3,551 polling stations in the state compared to 3,512 – an increase of 39 polling stations – during the 2024 parliamentary elections.
