Sports Minister unveil official Mascot, theme song for 6th Meghalaya Games

Shillong, Jan 14: The curtain raiser for the Meghalaya Games 2025 was not just a celebration of sportsmanship but a testament to the state government’s forward-thinking approach to sports infrastructure.

Speaking at the event, Sports Minister Shakhliar Warjri unveiled an innovative strategy to repurpose existing facilities in schools and colleges as venues for major sporting events, marking a significant shift from traditional development practices.

“Instead of constructing new venues, we are maximizing the potential of existing infrastructure. These investments will leave a lasting impact, benefiting communities long after the games are over,” Warjri stated, highlighting the government’s commitment to sustainability and long-term development.

This approach seeks to bridge the gap between sports and community welfare, ensuring that educational institutions and local communities can reap the benefits of upgraded facilities long after the games conclude. By transforming schools and colleges into versatile sports hubs, the government aims to promote sports at the grassroots level, inspire the youth, and create spaces that double as community assets.

Warjrii emphasized the significance of investing in sports infrastructure and youth development, highlighting that sports instil discipline, build character and foster unity among the youth.

Recognizing the role of sports in community building, he noted that the State government has prioritized investment in sports infrastructure and funding for sports associations.

Warjri also highlighted the government’s vision of empowering the youth to excel in sports not only at the state level but also on a national platform. While acknowledging that the full impact of these measures might take time to materialize, he affirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to nurturing athletes and fostering their growth.

The unveiling of the theme song “Niom Beit Naphang” and the mascot “U Kiang,”  underscored the state’s rich cultural identity and spirit of unity.
