Villagers resolve to block RKM school work

‘Not against school, but allotment of land already given to sports club’

Shillong, Jan 21: Residents of Mawkynrew and Mawlein under the banner of ‘Sur Paidbah jong ki ar Dorbar Shnong’ have resolved that it would not allow construction of the Ramakrishna Mission (RKM) school at Mawkynrew, East Khasi Hills till the land dispute is resolved.

The village witnessed violent clashes between protesters and police causing injuries to six persons including four woman police personnel and imposition of curfew on Monday.

According to the villagers opposing the project, the acting sordar and his close aides had allotted the land at Umjar Football Ground to the management of Ramakrishna Mission for construction of school building despite the same was handed over to Mawkynrew Sports Club way back in 2013.

Speaking to media persons, former Sordar of Mawlien village Phrangstarwell Wankhar said the people of Mawkynrew and Mawlein are not against construction of schools but against allotment of the particular land since it was already given to Mawkynrew Sports Cub.

Wankhar alleged that the current acting sordar along with his close aides had bypassed the two dorbar shnongs and its people by allotting land to Ramakrishna Mission to construct its school building.

“We also need the school to uplift education scenario in the region and at the same time we need a football ground,” he said.

Reiterating that the opposition is not against the school, Wankhar said, “We are against the misuse of power by the acting sordar and his closed aides.”

He also pointed out that the land belongs to the Raid which includes Mawkynrew and Mawlein.
