Hindu group raises concern over RKM school clash

Guwahati, Jan 22: Assam based Hindu rights group- Kutumba Surakshya Parishad (KSP), has raised concern over this week’s clash between villagers and police over construction of a Ramakrishna Mission School in the village of Mawkynrew in East Khasi Hills district and urged the state political leadership to take swift action against what it claimed were incidents of religious intolerance.

The group’s leader, KSP president Satya Ranjan Borah, alleged that the recent opposition by Christian groups against the construction of a Ramakrishna Mission school in Mawkynrew village was “A growing trend of defying India’s constitutional values”.

The incident in question occurred on January 20th with villagers angry with the decision to hand over the plot of land for the school, after it had reportedly been already allocated for a sports club, marched to the school site in protest leading to clashes with police.

Authorities resorted to a baton charge to control the situation, resulting in injuries on both sides. Following the unrest, a curfew was imposed in the village.
