‘Relief for people who earlier had to travel 100 km to reach block office’CM inaugurates Mawhati C&RD Block

Shillong, Jan 25: Chief minister Conrad K Sangma on Saturday inaugurated Mawhati C&RD Block at a programme held at Umsohliat in Ri-Bhoi district.

Terming this as another reflection of the MDA government’s commitment to take administration closer to the people, the chief minister said, “Mawhati block will not only help the people of Mawhati, but will also help people Umsning as a number of villages of Umsning fall under Mawhati block.”

Earlier, a huge population under Umsning C&RD had to travel over 100 km to reach the block office at Umsning, he said.

Explaining the government’s efforts to bring in administrative reforms, he said, “It will take some time to happen, but we are working on it.”

“We have seen that for many government services, people have to travel to sub-division or district headquarters. We are exploring the possibility of providing these services through block offices,” he informed.

He also informed that the sanction for Mawhati C&RD block office would be given at the earliest so that it can function soon.

He also informed the gathering about developmental projects taken up in the area, the main being Umsning-Mawhati road which would be an important economic and administrative corridor.

He further urged the people to work and partner with the government in the developmental programmes and also urged the officials to be working in Mawhati C&RD Block to render services to the people with kindness and empathy.

Addressing the programme, C&RD minister Abu Taher Mondol said objective of having blocks is to ensure government machinery reaches the grassroots and provide the hand holding and technical support to the various government schemes.
Mawhati MLA Charles Marngar, in his address, said, “This new block will uplift communities, foster development and enhance lives through the Initiation of various development programmes.”

Umsning MLA Celestine Lyngdoh was also present on the occasion.
This block will also benefit Umsning constituency as 66 villages of Umsing fall under Mawhati C&RD Block.

As part of the programme, the chief minister and other dignitaries also distributed M-Tabs among meritorious students of Class 11.
