Bike lifters gang busted in Garo Hills

Kingpin nabbed, 17 stolen vehicles recovered

Tura, Feb 1: In one of the biggest recoveries of stolen vehicles in recent times, a whooping seventeen two wheelers lifted from different parts of Garo Hills have been seized in a special operation conducted by West Garo Hills police leading to the arrest of four bike lifters, including the mastermind of the gang.

The weeklong operation across the district, spearheaded by Tura police in collaboration with their counterparts from Assam police, uncovered the modus operandi of the gang and identified its members who hailed from different corners of Garo Hills.

Two wheelers of various brands and makes, including TVS, Bajaj and  Yamaha bikes, to gearless scooters and even Royal Enfield motorcycles were confiscated from across the region. The gang would lift the two wheelers and tamper with the number plates and other details and prints before shipping them off to Assam for sale through a well organized network.

The kingpin of the racket was identified as one Jamesmond K. Marak alias Simon (32 years), hailing from Balsrigittim, Raja Apal under Bajengdoba jurisdiction of North Garo Hills district. He has been arrested.

Three other members of the gang were also taken into custody from East Garo Hills district. They have been identified as Tengwal R Marak (28 yrs) of Jamge (A) village under Songsak in East Garo Hills, Jangkal B Marak (31 yrs) of Rongchek Apal village, Songsak, and Judistil T Sangma (33 yrs) of Dosikgittim village in Mangsang, under Rongjeng jurisdiction in East Garo Hills district.

Police inform that all arrested criminals have a history of similar offenses and were previously arrested in several bike theft cases. After securing bail, the criminals were known to resume their illegal activities.

Wheel locks and GPS tracking advised

To prevent criminals from getting away with their hard-earned vehicles, West Garo Hills police have advised two wheeler owners to park their bikes or scooty in a secured place and install vehicle tracker/GPS system or secure it with a steering lock or wheel lock.

Authorities have also urged the general public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to vehicle/two-wheeler theft to their nearest Police Station or contact the Police Control Room, Tura at 8837423053 and 9089199064.
