Centre’s ‘NAKSHA’ programme launched in Barpeta Road to revolutionize urban land management

Guwahati, Feb 18: The Centrally-sponsored NAKSHA (National Geospatial Knowledge-Based Land Survey of Urban Habitations) programme was officially launched in Barpeta Road Urban Local Body (ULB), Assam, marking a significant step towards streamlining urban land management.

The pilot programme, which is being implemented in 152 ULBs across 26 States and 3 Union Territories, includes 10 urban local bodies in Assam, with Barpeta Road among the selected locations.

The launch event saw the presence of Kaustav Kalita (ADC, Revenue), Nirmal Jyoti Sarmah (CO, Barnagar), Priyanku Baruah (EO, Barpeta Road Municipal Board), Rajesh Sarkar (Chairman, Barpeta Road MB), Surathi Saha (Vice Chairperson, Barpeta Road MB), ILRMS Consultant (Barpeta Revenue), City Project Officer (Barpeta Road MB), ward commissioners, and other officials.

As part of the programme introduction, attendees viewed a demonstration video showcasing the ground-truthing process, along with another video illustrating how drones will be utilized for advanced land mapping.

Described as a “revolution in urban governance”, NAKSHA aims to modernize and enhance urban land records, ensuring accurate, transparent, and reliable documentation of land ownership. The initiative is expected to reduce land disputes, improve property management, and facilitate better planning and infrastructure development.

Speaking at the event, ADC (Revenue) Kaustav Kalita emphasized that NAKSHA would make land record-keeping more transparent, enabling faster and more efficient resolution of map and record disputes.
