Arunachal races ahead in hydropower: Dy CM fast-tracks ₹7,000 cr green energy boom, 7,500 jobs

Guwahati, Feb 22: In a decisive move to accelerate Arunachal Pradesh’s small hydropower development, Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, who also oversees Power & Hydropower, convened a high-level review meeting with project developers at his Secretariat Office in Itanagar on Saturday.

Stressing the state’s vision for Atmanirbhar Arunachal and India’s Net Zero goals, Mein assured full government support to developers while urging them to expedite project execution. He emphasized that the state is ready to assist in resolving local challenges by engaging with communities but warned developers that timely commissioning is crucial.

Commissioner (Hydropower) Sonam Chombay shared that Arunachal currently has 35 active Small Hydropower Projects with a cumulative allocated capacity of 570.75 MW, expected to bring in a ₹7,000 crore investment. These projects are projected to create 7,500 jobs for local youth and generate ₹58.25 crore annually in revenue through free power contributions post-commissioning.

During the meeting, the Deputy CM felicitated two developers for completing their projects on schedule – Devi Energies Pvt Ltd, Andhra Pradesh, for Dikshi HEP (24 MW) in West Kameng District and Raajratna Energy Holdings Pvt Ltd, Hyderabad, for Khangtang HEP (7.5 MW) in Tawang.

The meeting saw participation from top government officials and 19 power developers, including Advisor to DCM Anupam Tangu, Secretary to Power R.K. Sharma, Additional PCCF D. Dalai, Chief Engineer (Hydropower) Atek Miyu, Chief Engineer (T&D) T.K. Tara, and Director (LM) Mamta Riba.

With renewable energy development gaining momentum, Arunachal Pradesh is set to become a key player in India’s clean energy mission, paving the way for sustainable growth and energy security.
