Shillong, Feb 25: Meghalaya police have arrested five bike lifters in separate incidents from Sohra and 7th Mile in East Khasi Hills on Sunday.
District police chief Vivek Syiem on Monday said the police were hot on the heels of a bike theft gang for the past few weeks which ultimately resulted in the arrest of two bike thieves in a well-coordinated effort by Sohra PS and Special Cell EKH.
The arrested, Babu Marak (19) of Dalia Shella and Sunday N Sangma (30) of Samanda from East Garo Hills, were intercepted on Sunday evening at Sohra Rim in a Suzuki Gixer bike (ML 05 AD 4393), stolen from Smit.
The bike, picked up at Mawkdok from another group involved in lifting bikes from the city, was meant to be sold to receivers from Bangladesh.

Police made a follow up operation and three more persons who were involved in numerous bike theft cases were arrested from 7th Mile EKH with a scooty, Syiem said.
Barabor Namsaw (28) from Jirang, Patharkhmah, Banroilang Iawrod (19) from Kynbahmalai, Phlangwambroi Mawsynram and Declin Warjri(20) from Nongmensong Shillong were immediately arrested by the police.
The accused are being produced under Madanrting PS Case No 31(02)25 u/s 303(2) BNS.
Additionally, while the police were continuing with their checking at Sohra, another bike reported stolen on February 23 from Mawiong Umjapung (R15 ML05AA 3297) was recovered ahead of the checkpoint at Nongsawlia. The thieves had abandoned the bike and escaped fearing arrest.
