Locals participate in awareness events

Shillong, Mar 7: Two public awareness events aimed at fostering a cleaner, healthier, and sustainable way of living, as well as promoting a drug-free society was held in West Khasi Hills district on Wednesday.

These events, organised by the Central Bureau of Communication (CBC) Shillong, drew active participation from villagers during the cleanliness drive and the informative session.

The programmes were held at Pyndengrei and Don Bosco Technical School to raise awareness about key Government of India themes, such as “Swachhata Hi Seva, Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, Mission Life, Atmanirbhar Bharat & Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam”, as well as the vision of “Viksit Bharat” (Developed India). Both events aimed to inspire active participation from local communities and educate them on these vital national issues.

At Pyndengrei, more than 60 villagers came together to participate in a community-driven initiative focused on cleanliness, waste management, and environmental awareness.

The event began early in the morning with a cleanliness drive, during which villagers actively cleaned their surroundings, including village roads and public spaces. This collective effort aimed to promote a cleaner and greener environment.

Following the cleanliness drive, an informative session was held under the theme of “Swachhata Hi Seva”. Albert Thongni, a Swachh Bharat Volunteer from the village, addressed the participants and highlighted the importance of segregating waste at the household level.

Thongni emphasized that proper waste management and disposal start with individuals and households, encouraging the community to make use of the dustbins provided by the village.

In his speech, Thongni remarked, “Take responsibility for your own waste,” advocating for personal accountability in managing waste and cultivating clean habits that contribute to both physical and mental well-being. He stressed that individual actions could lead to significant positive changes, not only for the environment but for society at large.

Meanwhile, Didimus Nongsiej, the Headman of one of Pyndengrei’s localities, spoke about the critical role of community involvement in maintaining a clean environment. He thanked CBC Shillong for organizing the event and expressed his full support for future initiatives.

Nongsiej reminded the villagers of the Executive Dorbar’s ongoing waste collection efforts and urged everyone to cooperate for a cleaner and healthier community. His speech highlighted the necessity of collective responsibility to achieve a cleaner environment.

As part of the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” initiative, a symbolic gesture to honor and protect the environment, fruit trees were planted by the dignitaries, including Nongsiej and other prominent community members. This gesture was a meaningful addition to the programme, symbolizing the collective commitment to environmental conservation.

A dance competition was also organized and winners were awarded cash prizes.

Meanwhile in Don Bosco Technical School, over 50 students gathered for a session dedicated to raising awareness about the “Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan”, or the campaign for a drug-free India. The event began with a talent show competition, providing the students an opportunity to express their creativity and talent. This was followed by a thought-provoking session on the causes and effects of drug abuse.

The session was led by SI K. Mawlong from the Police Department of West Khasi Hills District. SI Mawlong discussed the growing concerns surrounding drug abuse, particularly among the youth. Drawing from his professional experiences, he highlighted the devastating impact of drug addiction on individuals, families, and communities. He also shared real-life examples to underscore the importance of making informed decisions to avoid falling into the trap of addiction.

SI Mawlong emphasized preventative measures that can help individuals safeguard themselves from drug abuse. He urged the students to remain vigilant and to surround themselves with positive influences. His speech stressed the significance of finding healthy alternatives for coping with stress and emotional difficulties.

In a powerful moment of solidarity, SI Mawlong encouraged the students to take a public oath, saying, “Say No to Drugs.” The students enthusiastically joined in the oath, reinforcing their commitment to staying drug-free and supporting others in their community who may be struggling with addiction.
