Tura, March 9: A wave of nostalgia washed over Tura on Saturday as thousands of alumni from different corners of the region and beyond converged on St Xavier’s- to celebrate their alma mater’s 75 years Platinum Jubilee, transforming the school into a time capsule as they relieved their cherished school days, filling the classrooms with echoes of laughter and shared stories, where memories were made and futures shaped.
The yearlong jubilee celebrations came to a grand closure as the school witnessed its largest gathering of past pupils who shared space with the current generation to mark this historic event in one of the oldest missionary schools for girls that also provided education for boys at the junior level.
It brought together its alumni, teachers, missionaries and dignitaries to pay tribute to a school that has been a cornerstone of education in Garo Hills, providing academic excellence, inclusivity and community service to one and all, for well over seven decades.
Joining the celebrations and hailing the work of the missionary nuns who started the institution was Tura Lok Sabha MP Saleng A. Sangma, who attended the closing ceremony as chief guest lauding the school’s contributions to society.
Addressing a packed school field with its alumni, he said “St. Xavier’s has not only educated but also inspired countless individuals to serve their communities with dedication and compassion. It stands as a testament to the transformative power of education.”
The celebration has been a nostalgic journey for many of its alumni, particularly those who travelled from across the globe to reconnect with their alma mater. The day witnessed former students and teachers sharing heartfelt stories, reliving cherished memories, and showcasing cultural performances, including a stirring rendition of the school anthem. A touch of reverence and a standing ovation was given for the Sisters of the Missionaries of Christ Jesus, who once served at the school, and had returned to Tura to participate in this once in a lifetime celebration.
Being one of the oldest educational institutions in the region, St. Xavier’s holds a special place in the hearts of the people of Garo Hills. From shaping individual lives to playing a pivotal role in the socio- economic development of Tura and Garo Hills, the school’s alumni include civil servants, politicians, business leaders, religious figures, and social workers, all of whom continue to make significant contributions to society.
