No plan for landfill site at Mawkhanu: Dhar

Shillong, Mar 13: The state government has no plan to set up a scientific landfill site at Mawkhanu under New Shillong Township, deputy chief minister in-charge Urban Affairs Sniawbhalang Dhar said in reply to a question in the assembly on Thursday.

VPP legislator from Mawlai Brightstar Marbaniang suggested the need for the government to develop a waste management plan for Mawkhanu. According to him, the government had acquired land up to 800 acres at Mawkhanu.

However, Dhar said a new landfill site was proposed at Nonghali for which 100-150 acre land will be needed.

He also denied any plan of converting the land into a European Ward, adding that the government is still preparing the master plan.

While also asserting that there are no illegal settlers at Mawhanu, he assured VPP legislator Ardent M Basiawmoit that he is ready to conduct inspection of the area.
