Govt to impose speed limits on roads

Shillong, Mar 24: In a bid to improve safety on the roads, the state government will impose speed limits for different roads in the state.

Within two-three months, the government is likely to issue a notification on speed limits for different roads – town, city and highways, said deputy chief minister in-charge transport Sniawbhalang Dhar on Monday.

The speed limits will help safeguard lives by minimising accidents and create a safer environment for all road users, he said after chairing a meeting on road safety with all line departments.

Implementation of the speed limits will significantly depend on the police.

“We requested the police to make sure overspeeding is restricted,” the minister said.

The departments concerned have been asked to take all possible measures to prevent accidents in identified locations.

“There are locations where accidents frequently happened and we have directed that corrective measures should be there to ensure less accidents in the future,” he stated.
