200 hawkers to be relocated in city

Shillong, Mar 26: The government is all set to relocate over 200 hawkers from the streets to designated hawking zones, currently under construction, at Khyndailad in the city.

The hawkers will be relocated after construction of the new structures, including opposite SBI Main branch, tourism minister Paul Lyngdoh told reporters on Wednesday.

“The names have already been finalised and we have indicated a space for about 200 hawkers,” he said.

Citing the hawkers being in the town vending committee, he said the hawkers are likely to be relocated to the designated zones without any serious hurdle.

Lyngdoh also reminded urgency of the matter, pointing out the Meghalaya High Court order to the state government to expedite the process of relocating hawkers, who are creating inconveniences to other road users.

On violation of human rights of the hawkers by their removal from the streets, he said, “As government whether we do it or we don’t do it… we will perform our duty and ensure that all road users have equal rights to the use of roads.”
