NEHU students seek VC’s removal

Shillong, Apr 2: The demand for removal of Prof PS Shukla as vice-chancellor of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) has once again picked momentum among the student bodies.

NEHU Students’ Union (NEHUSU) and Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) NEHU unit have sought intervention of state cabinet ministers for immediate removal of Prof Shukla, who is often blamed for the current stalemate in the university.

A joint memorandum in this regard was submitted to cabinet minister Ampareen Lyngdoh and AL Hek on Tuesday.

“We earnestly request your esteemed support in resolving the persistent issues affecting the student community, faculty, and non-teaching staff, which have remained unaddressed for an extended period,” they said.

They also listed their prolonged protests including hunger strike in November, which was put on hold following assurances from Union Education Ministry, against the VC’s alleged failure to effectively discharge his duties and alleged involvement in mismanagement of university affairs.

The NEHUSU and the KSU NEHU lamented that no action was taken despite lodging a complaint against the VC and even after the Centre constituting an inquiry committee to probe the matter.

“Your timely intervention and steadfast support will be instrumental in restoring academic credibility and institutional well-being at NEHU. We sincerely hope that you will take this matter forward and stand with the students in their pursuit of justice and reform,” they said.
