Hek slams Yunus for remark on NE

Shillong, Apr 2: Bangladesh interim government chief adviser Muhammad Yunus’ remark about North East during his visit to China has raised many eye brows in the region.

The latest to comment is BJP leader and cabinet minister AL Hek. Speaking to reporters, Hek on Wednesday slammed Yunus for allegedly indirectly suggesting China to take advantage of North East’s landlocked status and the vulnerable Chicken Neck corridor.

During his four-day tour of China, the octogenarian leader said, “The seven states of India, the eastern part of India, are called the seven sisters. They are a landlocked region of India. They have no way to reach out to the ocean. Bangladesh is the “guardian of the ocean” for the region. This opens up a huge possibility. This could be an extension for the Chinese economy.”

The remark bears significance for Meghalaya, which shares a 443-km-long international border with Bangladesh.

Reacting to this, Hek said the government would not allow any outside force to interfere with the affairs of India country particularly the NE region.

Yunus’ remark has already drawn sharp reactions from many leaders from the North East.
