Shillong, Apr 8: Chief minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday assured of legal action against those involved in disrupting the functioning of North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health & Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) recently.
Making a strong statement on the incident, he said, “Even during times of war, there is always an unwritten quote that the armed forces of any country never attacks the hospitals.”
“I am very disappointed to see that the operation of a hospital was interfered with,” he added.
Activists of Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) recently closed down the office of NEIGRIHMS director for alleged failure of the institute to fulfill its demands related to job reservation.

“Whatever the reason may be… if you do something like that, it is the people and the patient who suffer… from a humanitarian point of view, this is something very unacceptable. I am very clear on that,” Sangma said.
Mentioning about the case registered by police in this regard, he said, “Police is taking steps as per law and as per proof that is there and we will take necessary action.”
Not denying the relevance of HYC’s demands, he said, “There can be issues, there can be differences but there are ways to resolve it.”
Stating that no government entity has shied away from any kind of discussion, he said the government would continue to engage (with stakeholders) in the future.
However, disturbing the functioning of a hospital has never been done in the past, he lamented.
