Shillong, Apr 9: The state government is constantly engaged with the Centre to find out a solution to the ongoing crisis of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) and ensure smooth functioning of the central university, said chief minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday.
Referring to his regular communications with government of India and education minister on the issue, Sangma said, “They are doing their best and I again urge everybody that there could be complications but we need to come together to resolve it in the larger interest of students.”
On the continued protests against the incumbent vice-chancellor, he said, “There are issues on both sides. We have tried to understand those issues, tried to reach out to different stakeholders either by me directly or somebody in the system (government).”
He, however, made it clear that the state government has limitations in intervening in the matter since NEHU is an autonomous body and comes directly under Union Education Ministry.
“The state government is not competent authority to intervene,” he said.
Mentioning about his personal visit to agitating students, he said he had to make it clear that he was not there as a CM, but as a citizen, who would like to help.
“We are trying to see how we could bring different stakeholders together to resolve this issue, but we are not very sure how things are moving,” he said.
