Shillong, Apr 10: An addict treatment facility (ATF) will be set up for drug users in need of treatment and rehabilitation at Umsawli in New Shillong Township.
The Drug Reduction Elimination & Action Mission (DREAM) took the decision in a meeting chaired by social welfare minister Paul Lyngdoh here on Thursday.
The decision to set up the free-of-cost facility was taken keeping view the number of drug addicts picked up from the streets who cannot afford treatment and counselling.
The ATF, which will come up at an erstwhile COVID centre, will have trained psychiatrists, accommodation, and counselling for the addicts.
After completion of the treatment of detoxification and counselling, they should be fit to join mainstream society, the minister told reporters after the meeting which was also attended by DGP Idashisha Nongrang among others.
A team led by DREAM mission director will inspect the existing facility at Umsawli soon.
Confirming availability of funds with DREAM Mission for the purpose, Lyngdoh said the first phase may cost around Rs 50-70 lakh.
He also said the social welfare department through the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and the health department can also supplement the initiative to provide free treatment to drug addicts.
While asserting that the number of drug addicts has come down, he said it is still a major challenge.
