
Shillong, Apr 28: Acting on an FIR lodged by a NEHU teacher, allegedly assaulted by a group of student activists, police on Monday arrested NEHU Students’ Union (NEHUSU) president Sandy Sohtun and search is on for the others.
East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem said the student leader was taken into police custody following an FIR lodged by Dr Alok Singh, an assistant professor of Hindi department in North Eastern Hill University (NEHU).

The SP said investigation has started into the incident on April 24 and that all those involved in the assault will be arrested.
Sohtun and his five accomplices allegedly locked Dr Singh inside his chamber and assaulted him, causing injuries to his head, legs and hands, according to the FIR lodged at Mawkynroh police outpost on April 25.
They allegedly held a scissor by his neck and threatened to kill him.
The student activists allegedly accused the teacher of “doing politics”, which he denied.
NEHU teachers staged a protest in front of the vice-chancellor’s office, demanding concrete steps to ensure safety and security of faculty members.
