Tura, May 6: The finals of the 3rd P.A. Sangma Memorial Day & Night Cricket Tournament 2025 came to a spectacular closure at Tura’s Parade Ground, on Monday night, with team ABZO XI emerging as champions in a thrilling final against Selsella Jarambong Sports Association.
The finals drew a mammoth crowd and was also witnessed by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma as the tournament celebrated sporting excellence and community spirit.
The tournament, held from April 22 to May 5, honoured the legacy of late P.A. Sangma, who had always advocated for youth and sports development.
This year, the tournament witnessed one of the largest numbers of participating teams- 99 in total, showcasing talent from across the region.
And it was to be a nail-biting finale. Top contenders ABZO XI set a formidable target of 108 runs in 10 overs.
Selsella Jarambong Sports Association mounted a spirited chase but fell agonizingly short, finishing at 101 runs, handing ABZO XI a hard-fought 7-run victory.
There were intense moments and skilful play as the game progressed, keeping spectators on the edge of their seats until the final ball.
The game also embraced technological advancements, such as the introduction of Power Play, Third Umpire, and a Review System, enhancing fairness and excitement.
The tournament took cricket a notch higher by hosting Live Coverage of the finals, providing Digital scoring, video replays, and live broadcasts bringing a professional edge to the matches, and even engaging fans both at the venue and online.
Over Rs 4 lakh in cash prizes were awarded, motivating players and celebrating their achievements.
The closing ceremony also witnessed a cultural extravaganza, including dance by students of Pèchon Memorial School and a live musical show by well known local artist NOGA.
A brief history of the tournament
The cricket tournament first came into play in 2021, hosted by the Amra Sobai Durga Puja Committee as the Amra Sobai Cup. The tournament evolved significantly, transitioning through the CM Cup to its current form as a tribute to Late Shri P.A. Sangma.
