CUET centres: Pressure group seeks ‘proper arrangements’ for Meghalaya students

Shillong, May 9: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) on Thursday requested the state government to take immediate action against the allotment of examination centres for students appearing in the Central University Entrance Test – Undergraduate (CUET-UG).

In a statement, KSU education secretary Pynkmenlang Sanmiet said that a large number of students from the state have been allotted examination centres outside Meghalaya, in cities such as Aizawl, Dibrugarh, Dispur and others. This misallocation has become a recurring issue, as similar incidents have taken place in previous years.

The union said it is concerned that the National Testing Agency (NTA) continues to allot centres in far-off locations, causing undue stress and difficulty for students of the state.

He said that the union had previously raised this matter through official communication and public statements over the past years. Most recently, it submitted a letter to the Education Minister on March 19, 2025, urging immediate attention to this problem. Despite these efforts, the NTA has once again failed to rectify the issue, indicating a continued disregard for the challenges faced by students in Meghalaya.

“This situation not only causes logistical and financial hardship for students and their families but also risks discouraging them from appearing for the CUET-UG altogether. The Union considers this repeated oversight by the NTA as a serious barrier to equal access and opportunity for students from the state,” he said.

“Therefore, the Khasi Students’ Union, through this release, strongly demands that the Government of Meghalaya take urgent and concrete steps to resolve this issue with the concerned national authorities. The rights and welfare of students must be protected, and proper arrangements should be made to ensure they can appear for the CUET-UG without confusion, disruption, or unnecessary burden,” he added.
