Assam’s Raj Kabir Joshi smashes national squat record, bags 4 medals at powerlifting nationals

Guwahati, May 23: Raj Kabir Joshi, a rising powerlifting star from Assam, has made a spectacular mark at the National Classic Sub-Junior and Junior Powerlifting Championship being held at Shivaji University, Kolhapur, Maharashtra.

Representing Assam in the 83 kg sub-junior category, Raj Kabir set a new national record in the Squat, clinching the gold medal in the event. He followed that performance with a silver in Bench Press and a bronze in Deadlift, earning an overall silver medal and a total haul of four medals—a standout achievement that has brought pride to his state.

Raj Kabir is the eldest son of Guwahati-based businessman Rajesh Kumar Joshi and Aparupa Joshi, and a recent Class 12 graduate from SFS Higher Secondary School, Narengi.

Reacting to the achievement, Assam Congress chief Bhupen Kumar Borah took to X (formerly Twitter) to congratulate the young athlete:

“Today Raj Kabir Joshi broke the National record in Squat and set a new record in the 83 kg sub-junior category. He won silver in Bench Press and bronze in Deadlift. A four-medal haul at the championship—a proud moment for Assam!”

The national championship, featuring top sub-junior and junior powerlifters from across India, is currently underway in Kolhapur and has put the spotlight on Assam’s growing strength in the sport.
