DRI seizes ₹16 crore worth of meth tablets in Mizoram; 2 arrested

Guwahati, June 6: In a major crackdown on drug trafficking, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized 16 kilograms of methamphetamine tablets, valued at approximately ₹16 crore in the international market, near Aizawl, Mizoram on June 3. Two persons were arrested in connection with the seizure.

Acting on intelligence, DRI officials intercepted a vehicle on the Aizawl–Champhai Road, just outside Aizawl. Upon inspection, officers discovered 16 brick-sized packets of pink/orange methamphetamine tablets, cleverly concealed in specially fabricated compartments under the rear seat and inside the fuel tank.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the consignment was smuggled from Myanmar, a known trafficking route for methamphetamine into Northeast India.

The situation took a dramatic turn the next day, June 4, when one of the arrested individuals assaulted DRI officers and escaped custody while being taken to court. A joint manhunt was immediately launched with help from local police and residents, and the fugitive was recaptured in Hridaikawn, Tlangnuam, on the outskirts of Aizawl.

This is the second major seizure by DRI in Mizoram in less than a week. On May 30, officials confiscated 9.72 kg of meth tablets from another smuggling attempt near Seling, arresting one person.

The arrested individuals are being prosecuted under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, which carries stringent penalties including up to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment.

Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and continue supporting law enforcement in tackling the growing threat of drug trafficking in the region.
