Extortion notes ‘not authorised’: HNLC

Shillong, June 15: The proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) has claimed that the reported extortion notes served by the outfit on some businessmen were “not authorised” and that the act was a “serious internal breach”.

“An individual previously entrusted with financial responsibilities has unlawfully collected contributions without the knowledge or authorisation of the Finance Secretary,” HNLC general secretary Sainkupar Nongtraw said in a statement.

“Such conduct is a betrayal of the trust placed in the Council…,” he said.

The HNLC also warned of serious “disciplinary actions” on any such individual, whether a member or associate of HNLC, found engaged in “unauthorised” collection of funds.

Asked about the reported extortion activities of HNLC, deputy chief minister in-charge Home (Police) Prestone Tynsong recently said, “We are on the job to make sure no such illegal note be distributed to anybody.

The deputy chief minister had also warned that although the door for peace talks with HNLC is still open, the government would not remain a “mute spectator” to the outfit’s illegal activities.

He also said the government has not received any response from the HNLC despite repeated appeals for resuming the peace talks.
