Probe into Raja murder : Police to build a foolproof case: DGP

Sonam taken to MIMHANS for psychiatric evaluation ** Crime scene recreation likely today

Shillong, June 16: The Meghalaya Police have made good progress in the investigation into the Raja Raghuvanshi murder case and every effort is being made to build a foolproof case against the accused, said director general of police (DGP) Idashisha Nongrang on Monday.

Monday was the sixth day of the eight-day police custody of all the five accused, including Raja’s wife Sonam and her alleged lover Raj Kushwaha, in the gruesome murder that took place at Sohra on May 23.

“We got eight days’ custody, investigation is going on. A lot of the loose ends are being tied up and we are leaving no stone unturned to ensure that the investigation is foolproof,” the DGP said.

Assuring that the police have a very solid case and enough evidence, she said, “We do hope we can complete the investigation and ensure that the case is chargesheeted within a stipulated time.”

Asked about the timeline for crime scene recreation, Nongrang said, “I cannot say with certainty, but most probably it will be done tomorrow.”

The crime scene recreation, expected to take place at a parking lot near Wei Sawdong Falls in Sohra where Raja’s body was found, is seen as a crucial step to piece together the sequence of events that led to the brutal daylight murder.

Meanwhile, Sonam was taken to Meghalaya Institute of Mental Health & Neuro Sciences (MIMHANS) on Monday for a psychiatric evaluation on Monday.

“Sonam was taken to MIMHANS for psychiatric evaluation that her mind is okay. That was done as per recommendation of the doctor, who actually examined her,” East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem told reporters on Monday.

Asked if she was showing signs of mental instability, Syiem said, “No, it (the evaluation) is just to see whether they are showing symptoms of depressions while on police custody. It is routine (check-up).”
